Scope and Contents: This collection is comprised of 17, 16-inch sound discs containing 34 “Voice of America” radio programs that featured the performance of spirituals. Included in the collection are programs 1-2, 7-10 and 23-24 from the “Folk Series”; programs 27-30, 33-40, 45-56 from the “Negro Spiritual Series”; and programs 47-48 from the “Music Sinfonica” series. Ensembles featured include the Camp Meeting Choir, Livingstone College Choir, Lincoln University Glee Club, Hall Johnson Choir, Wings Over Jordan Choir, Chariot Wheels Choir, Xavier University Choir, Fayetteville State Teachers College, Howard University Negro Choir, Metropolitan A cappella Choir, The Legend Singers, Atlanta Spelman-Morehouse Choir, North Carolina College Choir, the Northern California Negro Chorus, the NBC Symphony Orchestra and the CBS Symphony Orchestra.
