Abstract

In 1995, filmmaker Andrea E. Leland partnered with Kathy Berger on a collaboration with the Garifuna people of Belize and the United States resulting in the documentary The Garifuna Journey. This collection includes production materials for the documentary including original Beta videocassettes of activities in the village of Barranco, Belize, and footage of a Dügü ceremony in Barranco recorded in the summer of 1996. Included also are sound cassettes of interviews, logs and production notes for the documentary, and videotapes of related Garifuna activities in Chicago.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of production materials for a video documentary The Garifun Journey (1998), including original Beta videocassettes of activities in the village of Barranco, Belize, and footage of a Dügü ceremony in Barranco recorded in the summer of 1996. Included also are sound cassettes of interviews, logs and production notes for the documentary, and videotapes of related Garifuna activities in Chicago.

Collection Historical Note

In 1995, filmmaker Andrea E. Leland partnered with Kathy Berger on a collaboration with the Garifuna people of Belize and the United States resulting in the documentary The Garifuna Journey. Descendants of African and Amerindian ancestors who successfully resisted slavery, the Garifuna emerged with a separate and distinct culture still in existence today.
