Abstract

The Great Lakes Experience Collection consists of materials relating to the African-American musicians who passed through the Great Lakes Naval Training Station from 1942 to 1945.  More than 5,000 musicians were recruited from across the country and sent to Great Lakes for training in military bands and jazz bands. The bands were assigned to naval bases across the United States, ion order to raise morale. The Great Lakes Experience Collection is largely comprised of reproductions of photographs relating to “The Great Lakes Experience.” Also included are clippings and miscellaneous materials.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection chiefly consists of reproductions of photographs of Great Lakes musicians and a few related materials.  These were lent by various people to Ms. Josie Childs, an organizer of a three-day celebration of “The Great Lakes Experience” that took place from February 28 to March 2, 2003.  They are arranged in folders according to the person who lent them to Ms. Childs.  The remaining folders include clippings and other miscellaneous materials.  A number of the photographs have also been digitized and can be accessed in the CBMR Library and Archives.
