Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains the papers of jazz saxophonist and composer Guido Sinclair, including lead sheets for his original jazz compositions, music by friends and fellow musicians, fliers for performances in the Champaign, Illinois area, five scrapbooks detailing his career, and miscellaneous audio and video recordings. Also included is information pertaining to his wife, Shirley Blankenship.

Collection Historical Note

Guido Sinclair (1935-1992) was born Sinclair Greenwell Jr., in Fort Worth, Texas. He moved to Los Angeles in 1944 and in 1961 Sinclair was a founding member of Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. He played with the ensemble until his move in the mid-1980s to Chicago, and then later, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.

Biographical Note

Guido Sinclair was born Sinclair Greenwell, Jr., in Fort Worth, Texas. A jazz saxophonist, he performed with many well-known jazz and rhythm and blues artists.  However, his papers date mainly from a later period of his life, when he was a resident and frequent performer in Champaign, Illinois. Of particular note are manuscript jazz charts of his compositions and fliers and posters from his Champaign performances.
